The Secret to Motivation for Daily Movement

I hear from so many of you that you are struggling Big Time to make movement part of your every day life. This may look like:

  • Not knowing what to do: Should I jog, lift weights, do yoga?

  • Lack of time: There just aren't enough hours in the day.

  • Family demands: How can I exercise with the kids home?

  • Work responsibilities: I have back to back meetings all day.

  • No energy: I'm too exhausted to workout.

  • Health conditions/injuries: I can barely walk with this pain in my knee.

  • Feeling self-conscious: I'll really start once I lose a few more pounds.

But one of the biggest obstacles I hear from you, and one of the most insidious, is that you just don't have the motivation to do it.

We all know what we're supposed to do, but when it comes down to it, we just... don't. And then we feel lazy, unmotivated, and disappointed.

Not a great way to go through life.

The next time you hit snooze instead of getting up for the morning stretch, or sit on the couch "just for a few minutes" and then find yourself on the other side of a 3 hour Netflix binge, ask yourself what happened.

Get really curious about it.

The thought that precedes our action (or inaction!) is so telling.

Did any of these 3 Motivation Stealers show up? Hint hint! I bet they did, probably even all 3!

  • I don’t want to...

  • I don’t feel like it....

  • I’ll do it later....

These 3 thoughts - that are SO COMMON - halt change, progress, and growth.

They provide momentary relief from the discomfort of doing the thing, but they also lead to greater discomfort in the long run in the form of disappointment, stagnation, and unrealized goals.

UGH.

What if there was another way?

What if you heard these thoughts - I don't want to, I don't feel like it, I'll do it later... and practiced doing the thing anyway?

What if you knew these objections were coming (because they are!) and you set out a plan in advance for how you would handle them when they inevitably arise?

What if you generated motivation on purpose for yourself, rather than relying on something outside of you to do it for you?

Change would happen. Progress would happen. Growth would happen.

You would begin to reinforce and reward the thoughts and behaviors you want to have in your life. Yes please!

Know this... discomfort is temporary.

Yes it takes time and practice. Yes, there will be some uneasiness as you build more supportive thoughts and habits.

But this work reminds you that you are strong and capable of doing challenging things - even in the face of a little discomfort.

THAT feels like a great way to go through your life and it's 100% possible for you.

TIP!! Create a mantra or standard reply you can offer yourself in difficult moments, such as: What would my best self do right now? or My future self will thank me if…..
